Many schools in England are part of academy trusts. We’re pleased to offer a trustee recruitment service to support this large – and growing – sector of education.
We understand that trusts have their own unique governance structures designed to best support each school. We’ll work with you to find the right trustees for your board, taking into consideration the level of expertise and commitment required.

Our process
When you register a vacancy with us, we will work with you to find the right trustee for your vacancy.
Our process includes the following:
- A call for your trust Chair with one of our experienced expert advisers so that we fully understand your requirement.
- The preparation of a role description, finalising your requirements.
- An extensive search for suitable volunteers for your role.
- A search within our current database of volunteers.
- Using advertising and other databases to headhunt a suitable volunteer for your role.
- Working with our partner organisations and networks to source a volunteer.
- An interview with all shortlisted volunteers to ensure we understand their skills, knowledge, expertise and motivations. The adviser also uses this time to ensure they understand the commitment required and the nature of the vacancy you have.
- Sharing the CV and profile of the best candidate for your role.
- Making an introduction to the volunteer if you wish to proceed.
After this stage, you are free to engage directly with the volunteer by whatever means is most suitable for all parties. If the volunteer does not meet your needs, we will go out to search again.

Why use us?
We have developed our Trustee Recruitment Service to deliver a bespoke service to a sector we already know well. Our staff have decades of experience recruiting for board level positions and our team of expert advisers draw on their extensive experience in the sector.
We’ll examine your trust’s needs and priorities carefully before connecting you with a skilled volunteer, working alongside both of you to ensure a successful match.
We charge a fee for the Trustee Recruitment Service offered, which covers the costs to run the service, and is highly competitive compared to other headhunting organisations.
Governors for Schools is a charity. We do not receive any government funding to deliver our service and so rely on donations and support from benefactors and partners. As we have developed our Trustee Recruitment Service we have carefully considered the requirements of the sector to deliver this service. To cover the costs of the additional staffing, outreach, and work required, we need to charge for the activity we do.
